One of Smith's Earliest Works, if not the Earliest

Many readers might find the humor here stale, given the amount of sophistication we accord ourselves in this day and age. It's by no means "fresh." Another reviewer described this book as "by the numbers" military recruit humor, but I'm wondering if this piece may have established those "numbers." Written around World War I, it seems unlikely there was anything like it to have preceded it. I was a little bored with the recruit's experience at first, but grew to appreciate what a deluded nincompoop Biltmore is, having been long sheltered by his battleship of a mother. I was quite entertained by the time I finished this little book, and value it for the snapshot of the era it provides. Moreover, it's FREE.

Do you know The TOPPER stories?

This american humorist, from the mid 20th century, is NOT as well known as Mark Twain or Steve Allen, or Steve Martin, but he was a very bright and funny writer. After you read this selection and after you stop laughing, look for TOPPER and Perhaps THE GLORIOUS POOL. Thorne Smith is really quite delightful and easy to relate to. Have fun. Then go look at the output of Steve Allen and P. G. Wodehouse. Lucky you if you are just discovering these authors. It is never too late.

In the Navy!

I grew up reading Thorne Smith. He has such a unique writing style. I love all of his books even the serious ones. This is the story of Biltmore Oswald, a rather innocent young gentleman growing up in the early 1900's. Between his hovering Mother and the Navy he begins his wild initiation into manhood. It's a kinder gentler time...which means no explicit sex, nor graphic violence, and alcohol is mentioned and implied by some weekends being just a blur due to too much imbibing. The conversations sometimes take a long time to get to the point but that is part of the fun. This book is appropriate for any age. But teenagers may find it tame compared to what is available these days.

I started writing The Brute while I was Scoutmaster for my sons' Boy Scout Troop, so it was natural for me to tell a story about a teenage boy on a campout. I grew up on a farm near Whitewater, Kansas, and many of my childhood experiences found their way into the story. Superb Adventure for Teen Boys

Mike Klaassen's first book shines as a well-crafted novel. The book doesn't flinch at gory images, gross humor, and real pre-teen and teen language. From the excellent beginning sentence to the last line The Brute has readers on the edge of their chairs. The gripping, tumultuous adventures of 16 year old Fortney Curtis, as he is literally tossed into the grips of a tornado's aftermath, are equal to that of a modern day hero's journey. Fort, his nickname, has another nickname, "Brute," attributed to his large size and his untamed temper, which can cause quite a lot of damage. In this saga Fort attempts to rescue his father, brothers, other young Boy Scouts, a rancher, and her teenage niece, Tana, from the devastation of the tornado that slammed down onto their wilderness Scout camp and the surrounding countryside. However, he runs into one dangerous obstacle after another including that of his own unharnessed anger. Yet, there are also poignant moments such as the unexpected loyalty of Butch, a Rottweiler, who Fort has just met. Will Fort achieve his two-fold goal of getting help for the others as well as taming his rage? The book is successful because it is encased in gritty truth about modern day life on a Kansas prairie. The story shows teen boys that they can learn to cope with their own inner hurdles while facing life's outer challenges. Kudos to Mike Klaassen for such a page-turning tale; and kudos to all the readers who risk embarking on this literary journey. Highly recommended for young adult readers twelve and older.

Right on Target

"The Brute" is a compelling story of one boy's struggle with his own weaknesses. Placed in a challenging situation where he must be the decision maker we watch him deal with these weaknesses in a fast paced, action filled adventure. A real page turner. The author is right on target with his modern day audience of teen boys but I enjoyed it as well at age 58. It is just the kind of story to get or keep teen boys reading.

When sixteen-year-old Fortney Curtis lands a punch, especially on someone younger than himself, it can do major bone-breaking damage. He is one big brute of a kid. Fort has an anger control problem, and his Scout Leader dad expects him to work on it.

Even though Fort is sick to death of being a Boy Scout, he agrees to help his dad on a wilderness camping trip with the younger Scouts. Fort and his bad attitude are thrown into a major misadventure when a deadly tornado hits.

With his father badly hurt, it's up to Fort to go for help. He soon finds his Scout training invaluable as he battles nature's extremes for survival. A rattlesnake bite, a charging, mad Brahma bull, rotting, maggot infested animals; nature cuts Fort no breaks along the way.

In the end, Fort is astounded to find that not only can he tame nature, but he can also tame a much bigger adversary- himself.

Mike Klaassen's The Brute is a chilling, fast-paced read for young adults; one that paints a colorful picture of youth overcoming all obstacles to become a better person for it.

Arleen Alleman is a former senior analyst at the Government Accountability Office, where she wrote extensively on many topics ranging from military satellite systems and highway technologies to endangered species and biotechnology. She has a science education but also works as a fashion model, teacher, insurance adjuster, jewelry designer, and proprietor of a home décor shop. Her interests include reading, health and fitness, origin and history of world religions, and travel. Her trips supply authentic backdrops and narration for her fictional stories. Born in England and raised in New Hampshire and Nevada, she lived and worked in Colorado for many years. She recently moved to Southwest Florida. She is the author of five Darcy Farthing adventure novels.

Murder Strikes Again!

Darcy and Nick agree to take a cruise (along with all their friends) to explore ports around the Australian continent. Why would they ever want to take another cruise after previous catastrophes? Well, the theory is that past problems encountered on other cruises could never occur again—or could they? Darcy falls prey to the JFS, “Jessica Fletcher Syndrome”—whenever a talented investigator travels, visits friends and family, or settles down in a new home, murder strikes again!

On this Australian cruise, crazy ants attack, a serial killer stalks his prey, and deceptions proliferate through the crew. I could hardly control myself, scratching, and searching for creepy crawlies each time I read about those crazy ants! The most sinister creep is the master of disguise, who targets cruise passengers in a well-planned series of incidents and disappears without trace.

According to the chief of security, Darcy’s ex-husband is a prime suspect in the crimes. She can’t accept an inept investigation that allows the authorities to arrest him! It’s a good thing there are plenty of fascinating ports and loads of history to keep Darcy (and readers) distracted while she solves the mystery piece by piece. However, Darcy’s astute revelations make her dangerous to an extremely disturbed mind.

Although this novel stands well on its own merits, anyone who has read previous books in the series will be pleased to take another cruise with Darcy and her friends. Readers delve into the love problems facing Darcy’s daughter, attend the wedding of her ex-husband to her best friend, and observe the Seattle gay couple struggle with their daughter (who was kidnapped in the last book). All the characters seem like family to us, and we’re interested to discover how they cope with the psychological ghosts of previous events.

Thankfully, we’re not physically involved when bodies start dropping on this Australian cruise. We breathe a sigh of relief as Darcy and Nick unravel the complicated motives that prompted the current killing spree. They might never set foot on a cruise ship again, but the "Jessica Fletcher Syndrome" will surely follow their trail on shore, too. Lucky thing for those readers who enjoy a genuinely good mystery novel!

Solid Murder Mystery Story

This is part of a 5 book collection by author Arleen Alleman. This is not the first book in the story line. It does however stand alone so you are not dependant on the other books of the collection to understand what is going on.

The story is a little over 300 pages in the paperback version. I was sent the book to read via email in a PDF file. At the start of the book it is a jumbled mess until you get far enough into the story for all of the players background. Until you get it figured out with all the backgrounds it is rather confusing to follow. In the end it does come together full circle and plays out well.

The plot is about a cruise ship and a group of people with a long history together in one form or another and a deviant that is trying to exact revenge on them. It involves some interesting ants to say the least.

This is an fairly suspenful book once you get in past most of the backgrounds of the characters. It is a good read for those that like murder mystery type stories. The book does provide a lot of detail and that may be where I found it confusing because in some spots it was so detailed I would actually lose focus on the story line. This book is available in e-book, paperback, and hard cover. I would like to thank Arleen Alleman and affiliates for sending me this book to read and give my opinion.

Incredible!

“A Current Deception” by Arleen Alleman is the fifth book in the Darcy Farthing Series. If you have never read anything by Alleman you are in for a thrilling and consuming adventure. Enough back-story is provided to make this a wonderful stand-alone read. If you have read other books in the series then you are going to absolutely love this one. I didn’t think it was possible for the series to get any better… I was wrong.

The story takes place aboard The Sea Star, World of Seas Cruise Ship. The Australian cruise brings together a host of characters from previous novels: Darcy Farthing and Mick Clayton who have recently wed; Darcy’s daughter Rachael and granddaughter, Anna; Darcy’s best friend Sydney and fiancé (who happens to be Darcy’s ex-husband), Brooks; Darcy’s friends Don and Charlie and their daughter Penelope. The Australian cruise is intended to be a honeymoon for Darcy and Mick, a wedding for Sydney and Brooks and a vacation adventure and much needed R & R for Rachael, Anna, Don, Charlie and Penelope. Also aboard the cruise we find unwelcome passengers in the form of a highly invasive species of insects known as yellow crazy ants, Noah the handsome and intriguing single cruiser who takes a romantic interest in Rachael, a small group from Kansas celebrating their 24 year high school reunion, crew members of questionable character and a mysterious man with an exotic skin tone, dark hair and unique eyes.

On the first day aboard The Sea Star a couple from the high school reunion group receive a welcome gift of fruit… crawling with yellow crazy ants. These ants emit a stinging, acid like spray that can severely blind, burn and possibly kill. Upon delivery the crew member stated the gift was from American Travel Corp… the travel agency owned by Brooks. No such gift was ever authorized by Brooks and the crew member who delivered the “gift” could not be tracked down. Frightening events continue to occur for members of the reunion group and The Sea Star’s Chief of Security appears completely incompetent to handle any sort of investigation. As the cruise continues several distinct storylines take place. Rachael falls head over heels for Noah and struggles to make mature decisions for herself and her daughter, Anna. (I seriously could have popped Rachael upside her head a couple of times). Wedding plans for Sydney and Brooks are threatened as someone attempts to frame Brooks for the mysterious happenings of his travel agency’s reunion group. Don and Charlie struggle with Penelope’s behavioral issues. A criminal mastermind enacts murderous plans. The yellow crazy ants try to survive in an unnatural habitat. Darcy uses her investigative journalism skills to put the pieces together and solve the mysterious happenings as inexplicable and tragic events continue to occur aboard the ship.
Alleman blends all of these storylines together into one phenomenal and thrilling mystery. The writing style brings you directly into the thick of it. One truly feels a part of the story. You don’t feel as though you are simply being told a story… you are living it. That feeling of reality will be magnified if you have ever been aboard a cruise ship.

I can easily consume a lengthy novel in a day and at a rather swift pace. When reading an Allemen novel I slow way down. Not because it is difficult to read, but because I don’t want to miss a single word. You never know when one small comment, thought or knowing look can deepen the mystery or bring you closer to solving it. Believe me when I say you do NOT want to miss a moment. Aside from crafting stories filled with thrills, murder, criminal elements, suspense and mystery Allemen also incorporates lots of historical tidbits and interesting facts about the location of her stories. I learned more about Australia through this work of Fiction than I ever did in World History or Geography.

I believe Arleen Alleman is a name to watch. There are very few mystery writers who can create such compelling, complex and completely consuming novels. I predict big things from and for this immensely talented author.
