Laugh until your sides ache, cry until your heart aches.

How can you not laugh out loud when reading a story about the daily struggles of a regular human being? Kathy Eliscu has the magic gift of writing..just like you think...with all the hidden sarcasm and frustration when encountering every day situations. She also sees the golden linings when clouds threaten unspeakable acts...like raining on your parade. Her character Tink is all that I admire. Smart, funny, humble and sometimes just mad at the world. You will love Kathy's writing. You will nod your head the whole time thinking.."That's how I think..."
Outstanding...I hope there are sequels....

Answering machine messages were never this funny. My message to you is: Read "Not Even Dark Chocolate Can Fix This Mess." Kathy Eliscu's first book is quirky, endearing and wonderful. I think I'll call Kathy to tell her how much I loved it.

Something-Percent Cacao and 100-Percent Amazing!

It would be hard to find a more enjoyable novel about…stress. :-) Good-natured protagonist “Tink” Casawill is overwhelmed by constant demands from family and relatives, sadness about her mother’s recent death, sales pitches aimed at her mother even after her death, aches and pains, job responsibilities (Tink is a nurse), very annoying supervisors, an advice column that gives her endless grief, etc. Yet Tink is resilient, and Kathy Eliscu’s novel is so funny and so lively that all the horrible stress seems almost engaging to readers -- though not to Tink! Making things even more lively is the way the book is structured and formatted: It includes emails, notes Tink writes to herself, illustrations, and much more in addition to the prose -- meaning the novel is also a visual treat. “Not Even Dark Chocolate Can Fix This Mess” is something-percent cacao and 100-percent amazing!

Not Simply A Boy-Meets-Girl Love Story

First thing you should know about this book is that it’s funny. Droll sometimes, hilarious at other times. After all, it is about Chris, a young Black man in 1998, leaving his home town of Apex, Georgia, headed for San Francisco on a Greyhound bus to live with his Aunt Grizelda. As soon as I heard “Apex, Georgia,” and “Aunt Grizelda” I started chuckling.

Aunt Grizelda sizes up everyone as she waits for Chris in the bus station. It’s a place for all sorts of people to hang out, sleep, make deals, and just get out of the weather. Auntie is comically opinionated, and a straight-laced, conservative type. She looks for a place to sit in the station, preferably next to “someone who seemed like they didn’t smell or carry the devil’s word.”

When Chris arrives she whisks him away to her house in San Francisco’s Western Addition, where she has lived alone for thirty years. The two get to know each other, and the nephew, who is an inexperienced 24, learns how different San Francisco is from Apex.

The big difference for the horny young man is the women. He doesn’t know where to meet them. He doesn’t know who is a woman and who is just looking like one. It makes for a large measure of awkward humor. Cringe-worthy and smirky, especially for those, like myself, who grew up Black and lesbian in a somewhat conservative family in San Francisco.

Chris’ exploits looking for women included good-natured teasing from the “night patrol,” men he hung out with during work breaks. They bet Chris money to get the phone number of a woman walking down the street with a chihuahua. Chris was confident, then confused, when the woman answered “in a baritone voice deeper than his own, ‘loving the accent, Tex, and the uniform, but I already have a boyfriend.’”

The aunt reveals herself as multi-faceted throughout the book, and she finds herself in some pleasantly unexpected situations. I thought she deserved way more space in the story.

Chris also grew and changed throughout the story. The ways in which he did that were not stereotypical, yet believable. Chris did not end up being the same person he was at the beginning of this book. The way in which he changed was slow, subtle, and realistic. I was very touched with his decision at the end.

Of course the main part of the book is supposed to be the love story between Chris and the young lady he calls the most beautiful girl in the world. I wanted Chris to get the girl, and I was glad I could laugh as he bumbled his way towards his goal.

"The Most Beautiful Girl..." captivated me, and I couldn't put it down. Chris's journey, his coming of age is a classic story that i recommend highly to people that love romance, humor, mystery and the unexpected.

This was a very good read.

I read the whole book in one sitting. Most of us had a "Most Beautiful Girl" in our past who we never took the risk of pursuing or pursued expecting rejection...and that's what we got. So the idea is, to me, a universal theme. It kept me engaged and interested in the characters lives, hopes, dreams and aspirations. Several twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Can't wait for the movie version.

A JOLLY GOOD READ

I found this to be a fascinating read and an insight to the way young families interact with each other and react to situations, both good and bad. The author's attention to detail is another plus because it helps the reader clearly visualise the situations and surroundings in which the characters find themselves.

It is the first time I've read a novel of this genre and I must say I was surprised that a good read could still be had without confronting indecent language and gratuitous violence throughout.

I've lived in rural Maine for 50 some years, and Clifford captures the characters of Maine people and the sense of place quite accurately in this story. I don't generally read much fiction, but this one had surprising twists and turns that made it hard to put down. Good read on a timely topic in Maine politics.

Awesome Read

I was totally engrossed in this book from beginning to the end . I liked the way the story was told ; it made it difficult to know what was really going on because I wasn't sure who to believe. The books has several surprises that are revealed that kept the story even more engaging. I cannot stress enough how much I wanted to the book to continue. I cannot wait until book # 2 I have never read a book before that took me from not being able to put it down to wanting to punch someone in the face out of frustration. Well worth the read!!!!

I absolutely loved the book

I absolutely loved the book!!! I was so caught up in the story and the characters that I couldn't put it down. I had it finished in 2 sittings. I especially enjoyed the use of different character's viewpoints, which I had not experienced before in previous books. It gave the book more personality. I would definitely recommend this book to readers of all ages.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. The character development was very well done, and gave an in depth view of the personal and professional lives of those involved in law enforcement. Written by a retired superior officer, he draws on his experience and weaves a tale that is accurate and informative. Here, he creates a tapestry of the characters who were in and out of his life as he progressed through his career. The reader comes to understand the reality that law enforcement officers come into that field from the ranks of humanity, and vary by their backgrounds and training. While we expect more from them, sometimes they don't have it to deliver; others exceed our expectations! I look forward to Brian Cook's next installment of this trilogy.

great book

Although this is a work of fiction it brings back many good and a few bad memories of my time in the office of the sheriff as a reserve deputy. Working Greystone, patrol out of ETS and SRS. THE RIOT when ROOTS was on the TV and the watch commander said lockdown with 30 minutes remaining. But above all the men and women both regular and reserve who wore an ACSO star will always be in my memory and my prayers. DS Campbell ACSDR 1973-1979 medical retirement.
